Pergola vs. Patio Cover: Which Is Right for a Houston Backyard?

An open pergola gives filtered shade but will not keep you dry in rain, while a solid patio cover provides overhead shade and rain protection. A pergola with a polycarbonate cover offers another option when you want sunlight and overhead protection from rain.

Which kind of outdoor space are you looking for?

An open pergola keeps the space connected to the sky. A polycarbonate-covered pergola lets in daylight while sheltering the area below. A solid patio cover creates more consistent shade for seating or cooking, so the choice starts with how you want to spend time outside.

How do starting prices compare?

Pergolas start at $15,000. Patio covers start at $25,000. Your proposal reflects the design, materials, roof system and included work.

How we help you choose

Tell us where you want to sit, cook and spend time, and how much sunlight you want to keep. We’ll walk through more than one option and explain what you gain and give up with each. As a locally owned, owner-led Houston company, we have no preference between roof types; the right choice is the one that fits your backyard and how you’ll use it.

What else should I know?

Will an open pergola keep me dry in rain?

No. An open pergola provides filtered shade but will not keep you dry in rain.

Can I get sunlight and still stay dry?

Yes. We build pergolas with polycarbonate covers for clients who want sunlight and overhead rain protection. Polycarbonate lets in light and blocks UV, but it is louder in heavy rain than a solid roof. Multiwall panels reduce heat transfer compared with single-wall panels; color and light transmission also affect heat underneath.

What are three pros and cons of an open pergola?

Three advantages are filtered daylight, an open feel and flexibility in the amount of shade created by the design. Three tradeoffs are no rain protection, less shade than a solid roof and furniture that stays more exposed to the weather.

What are three pros and cons of a solid patio cover?

Three advantages are overhead rain protection, more consistent shade and a covered setting for seating or an outdoor kitchen. Three tradeoffs are less daylight underneath, possible loss of daylight in adjoining rooms and more roof-connection and drainage details to plan.

Can standing seam metal work on a traditional home?

Yes. Standing seam metal can look traditional or modern. The roof shape, color and connection to the house make the difference.
