Frequently asked questions

Services & project fit

What outdoor living services does HPC offer?

HPC designs and builds patio covers, pavilions, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, paver and travertine patios, custom stone overlays, new pools, pool remodels, fireplaces and fire features.

Do you work on interior projects too?

HPC also considers selected interior renovations. Describe the room, goals and scope when you contact us, and bring existing floor plans if available. We will confirm whether the project is a good fit.

Do you offer repairs, maintenance or painting-only work?

We focus on new installations and defined remodel projects. We do not take on standalone outdoor living or hardscape repairs, routine maintenance or painting-only work. The carpentry and finishing examples in our portfolio show completed project work, rather than a separate maintenance service.

Do you install fiberglass pools or standalone hot tubs?

No. HPC does not offer fiberglass pools or standalone spa and hot tub installation. An integrated spa is included in our starting new pool-and-spa scope.

Frequently asked questions

Your design consultation

How long is the first design consultation?

We schedule 60–90 minutes. Some meetings use the full time and others wrap up sooner, depending on the scope, questions and complexity. We use the time to understand your goals, review the property and define useful next steps.

What should I prepare?

Bring inspiration photos or designs, relevant measurements and notes, existing floor plans for interior projects if available, and a property survey for outdoor projects. You do not need every material selected; a clear idea of how you want to use the space is a helpful starting point.

Who needs to attend?

All decision-makers should be present. Having everyone involved in final decisions at the meeting helps us move efficiently, avoid rework and provide accurate direction the first time.

What if I do not have a survey or floor plan?

Tell us what is available when we discuss your project. A survey is important for outdoor planning, and the information required depends on the scope. We will identify what needs to be obtained before design or approvals can move forward.

Can I discuss more than one improvement?

Yes. Tell us about the complete vision, including any features you may add later. Coordinating the structure, kitchen, patio surface, utilities and pool setting early can avoid decisions that make later work harder.

What should I expect to leave the meeting with?

Clarity about the project direction, a better understanding of the scope and defined next steps. Detailed pricing, drawings and the work needed to prepare for construction depend on the project and the agreed process.

Frequently asked questions

Investment, payment & financing

What starting investments should I plan around?

Patio covers start at $25,000; custom pergolas typically start at $15,000; outdoor kitchens at $15,000 excluding appliances; smaller paver projects around $5,000, generous paver patios around $15,000 and travertine at $15,000; pool remodels at $20,000; custom stone overlays over suitable existing concrete at $3,500. Custom pool and spa construction starts at $80,000, with pebble finish, travertine coping, waterline tile, variable-speed pumps, automation, color LED lighting, a robotic cleaner and pool school. Pool decking is priced separately, with options ranging from concrete to pavers and travertine. During your consultation, we’ll help you choose the layout and materials that fit your backyard and budget. These are planning starting points, not a quote for your property.

What affects the final proposal?

Size, materials, structure, utilities, existing conditions, access, required preparation and approvals all affect the scope. A defined design and property review allow us to prepare a proposal that makes the included work clear.

Are appliances included in the outdoor kitchen starting price?

No. The $15,000 outdoor kitchen starting investment excludes appliances. Appliance selections and their installation requirements are reviewed as part of the full project scope.

How does the payment schedule work?

HPC’s standard schedule is 50% deposit, 25% progress and 25% completion. Your signed agreement controls the amounts, milestones and any project-specific terms.

Is financing available?

HPC links to Acorn Finance and Lyon Financial. Compare each provider’s current terms, eligibility and approval requirements directly. No particular interest rate, monthly payment or approval is promised by the website.

Frequently asked questions

Pavers, travertine & stone overlays

What is the difference between pavers and a stone overlay?

Pavers are individual units installed as a new surface assembly. A stone overlay is a finish applied over suitable existing concrete. They have different preparation, installation and condition requirements. Our galleries label these materials separately so you can compare the right examples.

How is travertine different from concrete pavers?

Travertine is natural stone, with variation in color and texture. Concrete pavers are manufactured units available in different shapes, finishes and patterns. The appropriate choice depends on the design, setting, installation requirements and maintenance preferences.

Can any concrete patio receive an overlay?

No. The existing slab, surface condition, movement, elevations and drainage need to be reviewed first. An overlay does not remove the need to address an unsuitable base. We discuss preparation and whether another approach is more appropriate before defining the scope.

Can you coordinate the patio with the pool coping and kitchen?

Yes. We consider the surfaces together so color, texture, borders and transitions make sense across the space. Material samples and the actual site conditions guide selections.

Will drainage be reviewed before the patio is installed?

Yes. Existing drainage conditions, proposed slopes, collection points, door elevations and transitions need to be part of the planning conversation. Any included drainage work should be identified in the proposal.

Can I choose a project photo as a reference?

Absolutely. Save the photograph or note the project title, then tell us which elements you like. Photos help establish a direction; your property, materials and final scope determine the design.

Frequently asked questions

Design, approvals & preparation

Do patio covers and pergolas need HOA approval or permits?

Requirements depend on the address, community, proposed structure and jurisdiction. We review the current requirements for the specific property before setting the construction schedule. An approval process for one project should not be assumed to apply to another.

Can a patio cover match the home?

Roof proportions, posts, ceiling finishes, masonry and other details can be planned around the existing architecture. We review the intended connection and the appropriate structure during design.

Does a pergola keep the rain out?

An open pergola does not provide continuous rain protection. A suitable protective roof system can be considered where appropriate. We discuss daylight, shade and weather protection before selecting the system.

Can I supply appliances for the outdoor kitchen?

Discuss owner-supplied appliances during planning. Exact models, specifications, supports, cutouts, ventilation and utility needs must be confirmed before the surrounding construction and countertops are finalized.

Should I mention future glass walls or enclosure plans?

Yes. Future enclosure plans can affect the structure, openings, foundations, utilities and comfort requirements. Share those ideas early rather than assuming a patio built for an open layout will accommodate every later system.

Frequently asked questions

Construction & communication

When can construction begin?

A start date depends on the agreed scope, design preparation, required approvals, material availability and scheduling. We confirm those steps for the actual project rather than promising a universal start window.

How long will construction take?

The schedule varies with the work included, access, sequencing, weather and inspections or other required steps. The proposal and planning discussions establish the expected sequence and communication for your project.

Who will keep me informed?

Richard remains personally involved in planning and project oversight. A live client project portal keeps project information and updates accessible throughout the build.

How are changes handled?

Discuss a requested change before the affected work proceeds. Any effect on materials, scope, price or schedule should be reviewed and documented through the project’s agreed change process.

Is submitting the planning form the same as booking an appointment?

No. The form helps prepare your project details. Complete the live Calendly scheduling process and its confirmation to book an available appointment, or arrange it directly with HPC. You can save the brief or open an email draft to send the details; those actions do not automatically confirm an appointment.
